Transitional justice or justice in transition ? EU’s blind eye to Macedonia’s rule of law
The political crisis in Macedonia that began in 2015 and allegedly ended with the change of government in 2017 seems to be as relevant as ever to understand the current rule of law situation in the country. What seemed like a beacon of hope then is now slowly turning into a nightmare for the country’s judicial system. The EU-mediated Special Public Prosecutor, whose role was reminiscent of transitional justice mechanisms used in post-conflict societies, was installed to amend the lawless state and bring a peaceful transition of power after the political crisis. So, why does the EU tacitly condone it when the Special Public Prosecutor’s decisions are trampled on ?
